Get to Know Me

Who am I?

My name is Jett. I moved to Providence, Rhode Island, last year but I'm a Midwesterner by heart. I'm from a small town outside of Cincinnati, Ohio called Batavia. Despite being born into the Digital Age, I grew up playing in the woods behind my house. Because of this, I've always had a deep connection with nature.

Besides immersing myself in nature through hiking, running, and swimming, I like to read books and play with my cats, Circe and Calypso. Their names are inspired by strong women in myth, showing both mine and my partner's love of Greek mythology.

With regard to media, my favorite book series is the Broken Earth Trilogy by NK Jemisin. The story is a post-apocalyptic fantasy adventure that explores themes of systemic racism, intergenerational trauma, and ways in which we can hold on to hope and love. This series exemplifies why fantasy is an amazing genre --- especially with regard to social justice. Fantasy serves as a mirror to our own society, and the genre allows us to analyze social issues from an outside lens. The author writes her own blog where she details how she came up with the idea for the series.

Other pieces of media I enjoy are Dune, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and the Percy Jackson books.

I look forward to getting to know you more as we move quickly through this summer session!
